The Subaru Standard, produced from 1984 to 1987, was a pivotal period for Subaru as it solidified its reputation for reliability and pioneered all-wheel-drive technology. The vehicle, which belonged to the Subaru Leone family's third generation, came in sedan, coupe, and wagon body styles. It was powered by either the EA81 or EA82 flat-four engines, with the latter offering improved power and efficiency. Customers had the option of a 3-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission, with an optional part-time four-wheel drive (4WD) system that offered extra grip in off-road or bad weather. Because of its increased ground clearance, the MacPherson strut front and semi-trailing arm rear suspension system offered a comfortable and stable handling experience, making it appropriate for both difficult terrain and light off-road use.
The bodywork of the Subaru Standard had a boxy, practical style that maximized visibility and interior space, a trait common to cars from the 1980s. The interior had features including air conditioning, an AM/FM radio, and adjustable seats dependent on trim level, with an emphasis on functionality, durability, and an easy-to-use layout. The Subaru Standard offered a roomy interior with plenty of headroom and legroom for passengers, despite its small body.
