All About Subaru Brake Rotors

Brake Rotors 101

Brake rotors are the discs in a disc brake system. They work together with brake calipers and brake pads. What all three do is create friction -- the resistance used to slow the car or SUV you love down. The rotors also help scatter the heat of the braking process.

Types of brake rotors include (and go by many names, like) blank & smooth/smooth, solid, slotted, vented, drilled/cross-drilled, and drilled & slotted. Solid rotors are of the simplest design, and they're typically used on lightweight vehicles or in everyday situations. Vented rotors have internal cooling fins that help dissipate heat, and they're commonly used on high-performance vehicles. Slotted rotors have grooves, cut into the surface of the rotor, which help remove gases and debris from where the pad meets the rotor.

When to Replace a Brake Rotor

On the one hand, when you see the signs that it's defective: when you hear unusual noises or feel wobbling when you brake, or when you notice damaged surfaces during an inspection. Otherwise, change rotors every 70,000 miles or so.

How Much Subaru Brake Rotor Replacement Costs

Recent RepairPal data estimates anywhere from $325 or so to $415 on average; it can depend, however, on the Subaru model you drive, and on whether you have the job done at a Subaru dealer.
